They have a white chest, brown wings and tail, and a black head, with a pointed crest. The area under the eye and the lower ventral area is red. Males are slightly larger than females. They love water, so it is common to see them taking a bath. They mate for life and form their nests in the branches of trees. The eggs are pinkish in color with dark specks. The chicks fledge between 12 and 15 days of age.
They live in small groups made up of about 10 individuals, except during the reproductive season when they live in pairs. At night they usually gather in communal roosts.
