It is an omnivorous species, although its diet is mainly herbivorous. They live near the bottom and can often form schools made up of individuals of the same size and age.
They live in rivers and we can find them both in the middle course and in the uppermost area. Prefers clear, moving waters. During the breeding season, males and females move upstream, gathering in large groups. They usually breed between the months of March and May depending on which region they are in. The clutch immediately adheres to the substrate and takes about 15 days to mature.
The ventral and transverse mouth is bordered by powerful horny lips with sharp edges, like two blades, which allow it to scratch the algae found on rocks and bottoms. When feeding, it leaves characteristic traces that are reminiscent of hieroglyphics, which is why they are also known by the name “scribe”.
In BIOPARC Fuengirola this animal fulfills a fundamental function of maintaining and cleaning the waters.
