Biology and Behavior

Due to the lack of natural predators and its isolation on small islands, this pigeon has developed very bright plumage that makes it one of the most beautiful pigeon subspecies. Its body is provided with very bright blue-gray feathers, highlighting the long iridescent green feathers on its neck. The tail is short and white, and the legs are red.

The female is smaller than the male. This one can be distinguished by having a white iris, while males and young people have brown irises.

Young specimens are easily recognizable by their black tail, and because they lack the iridescent reflection in the feathers.

They live in groups and spend much of the day searching for food. They are monogamous and mate for life. During courtship, the male repeatedly bows in front of the female, ruffling the feathers on his neck.

They nest in a tree, a few meters high. The female deposits a single white elliptical egg. Male and female take turns incubating the egg for two and a half weeks. Parents feed the baby with crop milk during the first three months of life.
