This duck is distinguished from the rest of the African ducks by its grayish plumage and bright yellow beak. The female is generally smaller and lighter than the male. The young are similar to the adults, but have a marked line on the head and more defined spots on the lower part of the body. This bird is not migratory, but wanders during the dry season in search of water. They usually feed at dawn and dusk.
Recently it has been seen how mallard ducks, introduced by man in the areas of origin of the lemon-billed duck, hybridize with this species, generating fertile hybrids, due to their genetic proximity, which puts them in danger.
