The males are metallic blue, very shiny and with some greenish feathers on their wings. They have a white crest and the skin around the eye and legs are red. On the contrary, females are less striking with brown or grayish colors. They have a darker tail and lack a crest, although they have the same red color on their legs and around their eyes.
They have rarely been observed in the wild. This is one of the main reasons why their behavior or diet is almost unknown.
During courtship, the male raises his crest and flaps his wings and tail, emitting a humming sound. Egg laying occurs between March and May. They are not fertile until they are two years old.
For many years it was thought that this pheasant was extinct in the wild, until it was rediscovered in 1996.
Studies warn that today they could be extinct in the wild, since no specimen has been sighted in the wild since 2009. Unfortunately this species is very sensitive to changes in its habitat, most of the forests where it lived were destroyed during the Vietnam War and the effects of chemical warfare have not yet allowed its habitat to recover.
