Biology and Behavior

This crocodile only reaches 2,2 meters in length. It has four well-developed legs, its front limbs have five fingers while the hind limbs have only four. They have a very robust and laterally flattened tail, which they use to propel their swimming. The eyes and nostrils are above the waterline, which allows them to stalk their prey while remaining hidden in the waters where they live.

Among their adaptations to life in water, we find a type of valves in the nostrils and ears, which when closed prevent the entry of water during immersion.

They are the only reptiles with a secondary palate that allows them to eat their food in water without it drowning them. Their eyes have a transparent third eyelid that protects them.
