Kingfisher
coraciiformes
Birds
About 44 days of incubation.
2 to 7 eggs.
They feed mainly on fish, although they also capture crabs, shrimp, worms, snails, frogs and lizards.
From 8 to 10 years old
The dagger-shaped beak of this bird may seem disproportionate compared to its body size, but it is perfectly designed for fishing. It dives into the mangroves to hunt fish, taking advantage of the shape of its beak. Its short legs with strong fingers allow it to spend long hours on the branches near the water until, with its keen eyesight, it locates some prey. At this moment, it dives into the water to catch the fish, using its strong beak, and carries it to its perch to swallow it. They nest in the deep tunnels they dig in the sandy slopes of the shore.
Occasionally, if the fishing area does not have suitable perches, it suspends itself in the air on the prowl, flapping its wings vigorously and keeping its head still.
