Biology and Behavior

Chimpanzees are very social and diurnal primates. They move mainly on the ground in a quadrupedal manner and spend a lot of time resting in trees and feeding on fruits. They look for food during the day and at dusk, the rest of the time is spent resting and strengthening social ties.
Its social structure is called fusion-fission. The main group of primates - made up of 20 to 80 individuals - is separated into subgroups that are dedicated to different tasks such as, for example, searching for food, patrolling territories, etc. At night the subgroups meet again to form the main group and rest.

The degree of sociability of a chimpanzee depends on its age. For example, an 8-year-old chimpanzee is just as social as his mother. Then, as he becomes more independent, he spends a lot of time alone and creates a place for himself within his group. He competes with other adult males and in this way also develops other social bonds.

The strongest and oldest chimpanzees are the leaders of the group, with a hierarchy existing among them. A group of individuals can form a coalition and unite to overthrow the dominant male of a group and thus proclaim one of that group as the dominant male.

Body and facial expressions are very important for communication between chimpanzees. Through gestures and/or signals they can transmit any type of information, but the strongest social bond is grooming. With grooming, primates remove parasites and dead skin, strengthening social ties between them.

Games do not only occur between young individuals, but are also observed in adult chimpanzees. Males and females who play since they were little, it is possible that in the future they will have a more friendly than aggressive relationship.
