The Borneo noble pheasant lives in low-lying rainforests on the island of Borneo, among bamboo and palm forests. Females have a copper color and a bluish face, while males have dark blue plumage except for the tail and chest, which are orange, and the caruncle, which is light blue. Males also have strong spurs on their legs and acquire adult plumage the first fall, but are not fertile until the second fall.
The male courts the female in early March, flapping his wings, jumping and emitting a loud cry while puffing out his face. The female will lay an average of 4 to 8 eggs that she will incubate for about 25 days. The chicks change their plumage at 5 weeks of age, and males and females already begin to differentiate by the color of their feathers.
The noble pheasants of Borneo are very color-guided, so the male may feel threatened by any blue animal or object, and will run to defend his territory.
