carnivora
Mammalia
From 90 to 92 days.
Between 1 and 3.
This species is omnivorous, its diet is based mainly on fruits, although it can also ingest insects, small animals and even carrion.
From 20 to 25 years old
It is an animal with twilight and nocturnal habits. It spends much of the day in the trees, from which it sometimes descends to look for food. It uses its strong, muscular prehensile tail as if it were a fifth limb when climbing trees.
Its dense, dark fur allows it to camouflage itself at night. In addition, it has excellent night vision, which is accompanied by very acute hearing and smell, as well as long tactile vibrissae on its snout.
Lives alone or in small groups of adults with immature young. In these, it is the females who act as dominant members and generally, they are larger than the males.
It is the largest viverrid. It is also known as 'bear cat' or 'manturón'. It is one of the 100 mammals that exist with delayed implantation: the female is capable of delaying the implantation of the already fertilized egg until the environmental conditions are ideal for breeding.
