BIOPARC appeal to optimism to celebrate Biodiversity Day

The recent historic agreements for nature conservation are essential to confront the reality that every 10 minutes a species disappears on our planet. The BIOPARC Foundation and the parks of Fuengirola, Valencia and the Gijón Aquarium support the commemoration of the International Day of Biological Diversity as platforms for social awareness and with satisfaction for the important births that bring hope to species in danger of extinction.

May 2023.- For the BIOPARC Foundation and the parks of Fuengirola, Valencia and the Gijón Aquarium, today is not just any Monday, because 23 years ago the United Nations declared May 22 the International Day of Biological Diversity. A commemoration that this year glimpses optimism because, after years of negotiations, two historic agreements for the global protection of our planet have finally been endorsed. Before the end of last year, the Kumming-Montreal Global Framework for Biological Diversity specified actions to stop the loss of nature until 2050; And at the beginning of 2023, equally momentous has been achieving the Global Ocean Treaty, which has set the goal of protecting 30% of the oceans in 2030.

Biodiversity is the rich complexity of life that our planet treasures. The immense diversity of animals and plants that we can contemplate and their almost infinite varieties; but also all the microorganisms, the different ecosystems, from the jungles to the deserts; and the environment, be it water, air, land, etc. where everything interacts. A perfect and unique set, fundamental for life and our existence. The Foundation, as parks of life, were born to publicize this wonder that surrounds us and that we must take care of.

The hope for a change towards environmental protection comes at a crucial moment, when the data on the loss of biodiversity is terrifying: every 10 minutes a species becomes extinct, 150 a day.

In this sense, the BIOPARC of Fuengirola, Valencia and the Gijón Aquarium focus their efforts on actively preserving the most threatened species and habitats with participation in the mosts of 100 international conservation programs. Each BIOPARC brings hope with very notable births of species such as orangutans, elephants, gorillas, sharks, chimpanzees, seahorses or Komodo dragons.

In the same way, action is necessary on the habitats of origin and those “biodiversity hot spots” on which the BIOPARC Foundation works. From Borneo to the island of Flores, passing through Madagascar, Cameroon or Senegal; and also in the closest environments, be it Asturias, Comunitat Valenciana or Andalusia. The Foundation collaborates with prestigious institutions to reverse the situation of threat and deterioration of these spaces and the animals they shelter. And together with the BIOPARC of Fuengirola, Valencia and the Gijón Aquarium, they convey the love of nature to thousands of people every year so that we individually commit to achieving a promising future for our home, planet Earth.
