May 29, 2023.- As we enter the days leading up to the celebration of World Oceans Day, on June 8, the BIOPARC Foundation and MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) have signed a collaboration agreement to promote sustainable fishing and ocean conservation. This alliance is another step in BIOPARC's commitment to the preservation of nature and wildlife, the promotion of environmentally friendly practices and the protection of marine ecosystems. The agreement formalized by both organizations will promote the responsible consumption of fish and seafood, through the dissemination of information about the MSC blue seal and good environmental practices. To this end, initiatives will be carried out, jointly, to raise awareness and educate the public about the importance of opting for foods of certified origin, highlighting the positive impact it has on marine biodiversity.

The director of the BIOPARC Foundation, Fernando González Sitges, highlights the relevance of this alliance: “This agreement represents a great opportunity to join forces in education and outreach on ocean conservation. For us it is essential to collaborate with an organization like MSC, which shares values and our concern for nature, and we are very excited as it will allow us to advance in the promotion of sustainable and environmentally friendly practices.”

For her part, Laura Rodríguez Zugasti, director of the Marine Stewardship Council in Spain and Portugal, states: “We believe in environmental education to generate attitudes and values that recognize the importance of the oceans and the desire to take care of them. It is also very important to publicize sustainable fishing, and the examples we have in our country. The collaboration with BIOPARC opens up great opportunities for us to get these messages across and we are delighted to be able to work together in three cities so dedicated to the sea.".

At a crucial moment in the face of the loss of global biodiversity, local actions are essential and, especially, raising awareness, mobilizing and involving society in the necessary transformation of consumption habits. In this sense, located in three cities of great maritime relevance, the BIOPARC of Fuengirola, Valencia and the Gijón Aquarium are positioned as platforms to convey this commitment to ocean conservation to the general public.
