Santa Claus makes a very special stop at Bioparc Fuengirola to deliver gifts to some of the species that live in the park

In addition to enriching their daily routines, these actions strengthen the bond between keepers and animals, allowing for a better understanding of their specific needs. Enrichment programs also educate the public about the importance of respecting and protecting wildlife, showing that zoos are not just places of display, but centers of conservation and care.

This endearing activity, which combines the magic of Christmas with a commitment to animal welfare, is part of the enrichment programmes developed by the Zoology team. Surprised with boxes full of delicious food to stimulate their curiosity and natural behaviour, the gorillas became the stars of a unique experience that delighted visitors. In addition, Santa's visit continued to the Sri Lankan leopard area and the large Maya aviary where marmosets and other small primates enjoyed the magical enrichment., highlighting once again the educational and conservation approach that defines Bioparc Fuengirola.

The importance of enrichment in zoos

Animal welfare is a fundamental pillar of modern zoos, and enrichment programmes play a key role in ensuring this. These initiatives seek to stimulate the natural behaviour of species, encouraging their physical and mental activity, and ensuring that they enjoy a full and healthy life in their recreated environments.

A prime example of these enrichments are the Christmas gifts designed especially for the animals. These “surprises” often contain food inside and are designed to motivate the animals to explore, search and solve small challenges, just as they would in their natural habitat. From gorillas opening packages filled with fruits and vegetables to lemurs discovering tasty treats hidden in decorated boxes, these activities are not only visually delightful for visitors, but they serve a vital function in the animals’ lives.

In addition to enriching their daily routines, these actions strengthen the bond between keepers and animals, allowing for a better understanding of their specific needs. Enrichment programs also educate the public about the importance of respecting and protecting wildlife, showing that zoos are not just places of display, but centers of conservation and care.

On special dates such as Christmas, these enrichments take on a special meaning, reminding us that every action counts in the mission to guarantee the well-being of the species under our responsibility.
