Following the open call last September, the Andalucía and Eduardo Janeiro schools have been selected to participate in the first edition of the "Nature in the Classroom" educational project, promoted by BIOPARC Fuengirola in collaboration with the Fuengirola City Council. This innovative environmental education initiative will transform classrooms into small, living ecosystems through the installation of shrimp tanks—freshwater aquariums housing Neocaridina shrimp, plants, and algae. Through observation and daily care of this habitat, students will learn about the principles of biodiversity, ecosystems, and sustainability in a hands-on way.
Teacher training and visit to BIOPARC in December
During December, participating teachers will receive specialized training from the BIOPARC Fuengirola education team. In addition, both the teachers and students involved in the project will enjoy an educational visit to the park, where they will learn firsthand how the natural ecosystems represented at BIOPARC are cared for and maintained. This training will serve as the starting point for the installation of shrimp tanks in the classrooms, scheduled for the second half of January, when the project will officially begin.
Learning throughout the course
Starting in January, students will take on the role of ecosystem caretakers: maintaining the aquarium, taking measurements, performing cleaning tasks, monitoring water conditions, and observing the species. With the support of the BIOPARC educational team, they will learn about biology, ecology, environmental responsibility, and teamwork, integrating these topics into the school curriculum. The project will run throughout the 2025-2026 school year and will allow students to experience science firsthand, connecting them with the values of respect and care for the environment.
A shared commitment to education and sustainability
With “Nature in the Classroom”, BIOPARC Fuengirola, with the support of the Fuengirola City Council, takes a new step in its commitment to environmental education and conservation, bringing nature into the classroom to inspire new generations.
Through initiatives like this, BIOPARC Fuengirola reaffirms its role as a leader in environmental education and outreach, promoting knowledge and respect for nature. The park works daily to bring people closer to some of the planet's most endangered species, creating experiences that inspire empathy and commitment to biodiversity conservation. Its educational work extends beyond the park's boundaries, reaching the wider community and actively contributing to building a more environmentally conscious and responsible society.
