Ernie, the little gorilla born at BIOPARC Fuengirola, turns one month old: an exceptional start alongside his mother Wefa

Today we celebrate with enormous joy the Ernie's first month of life, the western lowland gorilla cub (Gorilla gorilla gorillaErnie was born on November 29th in our park. Since her birth, she has developed excellentlyshowing healthy development, strength, and a deep connection with her mother, wefa.

During these first few weeks, Ernie remains very close to Wefa's lapwhere it spends most of its time in a warm and safe environment. This continuous contact is crucial at this early stage of its life: in newborn gorillas, the mother-infant bond is established very intensely, with the baby clinging to its mother's body and nursing regularly, which promotes both its nutrition and emotional well-being. In the wild, gorilla infants typically stay with their mothers almost inseparable for several months before beginning to explore more independently.

Wefa takes care of Ernie in an exemplary mannerShe protects her, cradles her, and responds to her needs with tenderness and constant attention. This devoted maternal response is typical in gorillas: scientific studies show that gorilla mothers play a central role in the social and physical development of their offspring during their first months of life, strengthening a bond that will be key to their learning and future independence.

Ernie's presence not only represents a huge joy for the technical team and visitors of BIOPARC Fuengirola, but also a a symbol of hope for the conservation of a species listed as critically endangeredTheir arrival contributes to the social enrichment of the gorilla family group that lives in the park, a stable and cohesive group made up of adults and other individuals who share social dynamics typical of these great apes.

The arrival of a new offspring brings multiple benefits to the group: it strengthens social interactions among members, stimulates natural caregiving and learning behaviors, and reinforces group cohesion. In gorillas, new offspring also facilitate the transmission of cultural and social behaviors from one generation to the next, key aspects of environmental and ethological enrichment in captivity.

Since the arrival of his first group of gorillas in 2004BIOPARC Fuengirola has maintained a firm commitment to the conservation of western lowland gorillaconsolidating its position as a leading center in Europe. After years of experience and continuous improvement in animal welfare, the park was designated to host a breeding group within the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP)achieving milestones such as the birth of Ekan, the first gorilla born in AndalusiaAnd now Ernie's. This work is crucial in a critical context, since the western lowland gorilla is listed by the IUCN as “Critically Endangered”Threatened primarily by habitat loss and poaching, each birth represents a crucial step for the species' future survival.
