BIOPARC Fuengirola opens the public selection of a name for its Bornean orangutan baby

The little one, who has turned out to be female, can be named Nusa, Kali or Bima in a live vote open to visitors

BIOPARC Fuengirola is once again inviting the public to be part of a very special moment: choosing the name of the Bornean orangutan baby born on Sunday, April 19th. The park shared this news last week, which generated considerable interest given that this species is among the most endangered on the planet. During these first few days, the little one is developing well, always with her mother, Mukah, who is attentive, calm, and very protective, as is typical of this species.

Following the initial assessments by the technical team, it has been confirmed that the cub is female. The next step will be to name her, continuing a long-standing tradition at BIOPARC Fuengirola.

As usual, the process begins with an internal vote by the Zoology team, whose keepers propose and select the names. From this first phase, three finalist options have emerged, which will now be put to a public vote to directly involve visitors in this milestone.

The voting process also features a new element: it will take place in person at the park itself.

From Wednesday, April 29th until May 3rd, all visitors to BIOPARC Fuengirola will be able to participate by depositing their vote in a ballot box located next to the orangutan habitat.

The proposed names are closely linked to the origin of the species:

  • nusa, which means “island” in Indonesian, referring to Borneo.
  • Time, inspired by Kalimantan, the Indonesian name for the island.
  • Bima, a name associated with a region of Indonesia, reinforcing the geographical link.

With this initiative, BIOPARC Fuengirola not only seeks to name the new member, but also to strengthen the public's connection with conservation, making them involved from the very beginning.

El Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) It is listed as critically endangered, primarily due to deforestation, habitat loss, and human pressure. Every birth represents a hopeful step forward in international conservation programs.

BIOPARC Fuengirola participates in the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, actively contributing to the conservation of this emblematic species. Furthermore, through BIOPARC FoundationSupport is provided for the protection of the orangutan in its natural habitat in Borneo, collaborating on tropical forest conservation projects and working with local communities.
