Bioparc Fuengirola, a benchmark in Komodo dragon conservation

The text, entitled "Reproduction of Komodo dragons (Varanus komodoensis) in Bioparc Fuengirola", details the complex work carried out to successfully unite the specimens Reo and Ora, and the subsequent birth of five offspring.

The head of the Herpetology Department at Bioparc Fuengirola, Milagros Robledo Rodríguez, has published a detailed article in the AICAS newsletter about the breeding process of Komodo dragons in the park, an unprecedented milestone at the national level.

The text, titled “Reproduction of Komodo dragons (Varanus komodoensis) at Bioparc Fuengirola”, details the complex work carried out to successfully unite Reo and Ora, and the subsequent birth of five offspring: Juanito, Fénix, Embun, Drakaris, and Saya. This achievement is the result of years of experience, training, teamwork, and a deep dedication to animal welfare.

The reproduction of this species, considered endangered by the IUCN, represents a significant step forward within the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP), of which Bioparc has been a member for over a decade. Ophthalmological intervention on the male Reo, ultrasound monitoring of Ora, controlled environmental conditions, and meticulous planning were key to achieving this reproductive success.

Making these types of achievements visible not only highlights the technical and scientific work carried out in parks like Bioparc Fuengirola, but is also essential for raising awareness about the importance of conservation programs, both ex situ and in situ, in a world where biodiversity is seriously threatened.
